The Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School Speech Team typically consists of up to ten (10) middle-school students who prepare in the fall semester for approximately six competitions in the spring semester which are organized by (i) high schools in the Philadelphia metropolitan area with speech & debate programs and (ii) an association of Philadelphia-area elementary schools which offer the activity. Competitions at the middle school level are similar to those conducted at the high school level under the governance of the National Speech & Debate Association and the National Catholic Forensic League.
Practices are typically held once a week. Students pick an event (a "flavor" of public speaking, such as dramatic interpretation, original oratory, declamation, or interpretation of prose/poetry), are assisted with piece selection, and work on improving/refining their respective presentations.
