Press Release: MPRCS Students Excel at First in Math

Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School is ranked one of the top schools in the Nation for the "First in Math" online program

The school's seventh and eighth grade team is ranked #1 in the Archdiocese for "First in Math"

Wallingford, PA, October 16, 2014 - Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School students have been excelling in the online "First in Math" program. Within the Philadelphia Archdiocese, Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School is ranked among the top ten schools. Moreover, our seventh and eighth grade team ranks first. All students in grades one through eight have been given user names to access the sight and instructions on how to play the games have been shown in the computer lab. Our teachers continue to encourage their students to play at least thirty to sixty minutes a week, in order to strengthen their basic math facts. These games also assist them in the solving of word problems and in the understanding of the concepts of measurement, time and money calculations.

MPRCS Honors Math Teacher, Mrs. Ruth Bachman, states: "We use the First in Math online program to supplement our Math curriculum. The students really enjoy using the program and a friendly competition develops between students, student teams and family teams to see who can earn the most points in First in Math!"

As an added feature, family members can play along with their children. Once a student has earned 500 stickers, a Family Link User ID is made available at the bottom of that student's home page. This allows for each student to share his/her full-access User ID with a family member. Logins will appear on the student's Homepage. Sticker counts of the student and his or her family member are combined for a Family Team total score. This fun and challenging activity is a mechanism which provides a means of motivation for students and families as they spur on one another to greater achievement in mathematics. Currently, there are nineteen family teams playing for our school. Hopefully, more families will join in our First in Math competitive family experience.

Eighth Grader, Thomas Haas, states: "First in Math has helped me with Math in general and especially when it comes to test taking. I enjoy the friendly competition with classmates and it inspires me to use it every day. Last year I accumulated over 12,000 points but this year I have already accumulated over 10,000 points and am well on my way to doubling last year's score."

Stephanie Moyer, a second grader at MPRCS, had this to say about First in Math: "I play First in Math every night and have 3,072 points, more than my sister who's in 5^th grade! Sometimes I have to ask my sister to stop playing on our computer at home so I can get my points higher."
