MOTHER OF PROVIDENCE REGIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS HOLD MOCK TRIAL
Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School seventh grade students participated in a Mock Trial after months of preparation
Wallingford, PA, May 20, 2015– Mrs. Nancy Grogan, Esq., has been working with the Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School’s seventh grade since January to prepare for and present a Mock Trial. Once a week Mrs. Grogan met with the seventh grade during their Social Studies class to study aspects of the United States Law including the Bill of Rights and the amendments that pertain to trials and court law. Students learned about amendments such as the right to a speedy trial, the right to an attorney, and the privilege against self – incrimination. Students learned the various roles involved in a trial including defense attorneys, prosecution, the jury, and witnesses and were able to choose their roles to prepare for the mock trial. The entire middle school was invited to participate as Press Representatives, Jury members and witnesses.
Through participation in mock trials and analysis of the activity, students gain an insider’s perspective on courtroom procedures. Mock trials help students gain a basic understanding of the legal mechanism through which society chooses to resolve many of its disputes. While learning the details of the trial process, students are also developing a number of skills that are universally necessary: critical analysis of problems, strategic thinking, questioning skills, listening skills, skills in oral presentation and extemporaneous argument, and skills in preparing and organizing material.
The Mock Trial was presented on May 20
th at Mother of Providence for a trial based on a case where a civilian was accused of stealing money that had fallen from a Brink’s truck. The defense attorneys argued for acquittal and called both eyewitness and character witnesses to the stand. The prosecution presented their argument for conviction. In the end, the defendant was acquitted.
To continue their study of the law, the students will be visiting the Delaware County Court House next week to visit the courtroom of Judge Anne Osborne.
